How the Onboarding Flow Works

The full setup takes just a few minutes. Each step is optional where possible so you can get inside the app quickly — and come back to complete your profile later.

  • House Rules — agree to Thred's four community values: Be Your Authentic Self, Treat Others With Respect, Be Safe, and Be Proactive
  • Username — choose a unique handle (no real name required)
  • Adventure Preferences — select what you are looking for on Thred
  • Profile Photo — optional, but a clear photo increases connection requests
  • Date of Birth — age verification (18+), never shown on your profile
  • Phone Number — optional OTP verification for account security, never shared
  • Email Verification — confirm your email to unlock the full app
  • Notifications — optional, but recommended for connection requests and events
  • ZIP Code — powers local event and person discovery
  • Location Permission — optional device-level access for live features
  • Sport Selection — choose at least one: Motorcycles, Watersports, Running/Hiking, Snowsports, Cycling, or Climbing
  • Activities & Skill Levels — configure specific activities and self-assessed skill levels per sport

Your Sports Drive Who You Discover

Sport selection is the most important step in onboarding. Every person you see in the Connect Discover tab, every group suggested to you, and every event surfaced in your feed is filtered by the sports you choose and your skill levels within them.

  • Select multiple sports — Thred shows people who match any of them
  • Set a skill level (1–5) per sport so you find compatible partners, not just any athlete
  • Sport filters in Connect and Events respect your saved preferences
  • Update your sports and skill levels any time from profile settings — your feed updates immediately

Privacy-First From Your First Tap

Thred is built for real-world meetups, which means privacy is not an afterthought — it is built into every step of onboarding. You control what you share and when.

  • Username-only identity — no real name required at any point
  • Phone number used for verification only, never visible to other users
  • Location and notification permissions are optional — you choose at setup and can change any time
  • Date of birth used for age verification only, never shown on your profile
  • Profile photo is optional at setup — add one when you are ready

What Happens After You Complete Your Profile

Once your profile is created, Thred takes you straight to the home feed — no tutorial maze, no paywall. Your sport selections immediately power the Discover tab in Connect, the Events feed, and group suggestions, so the app is useful from the first session.

  • Home feed shows upcoming activities and events matched to your sports
  • Connect Discover tab shows people who share your activity interests near you
  • Group suggestions surface communities built around your sports
  • You can send connection requests immediately after setup

Frequently Asked Questions About Getting Started on Thred

How do I start using Thred?

Open the app after installing and tap Get Started on the welcome screen. You will be guided through each setup step — most are optional, so you can be in the app in under two minutes.

What information do I need to provide during onboarding?

The required fields are a username, date of birth, and at least one sport selection. Phone number, profile photo, notifications, and location access are all optional and can be added or changed at any time from settings.

Do I need to use my real name?

No. Thred uses a username-only identity system. You can use any handle you prefer — your full name is never required and is never shown to other users.

Why does Thred need my date of birth?

Date of birth is used to verify you are at least 18 years old and to help provide age-appropriate content. It is not displayed on your public profile or shared with other users.

Is my phone number shared with other users?

No. Your phone number is used only for account verification and security (OTP). It is never displayed on your profile or shared with any other user.

What if I don't want to share my location?

Location access is completely optional. You can skip it during onboarding and enable it later in your device settings. Enabling it unlocks nearby event and people discovery, but the app works without it.

Can I change my activity preferences after onboarding?

Yes. Go to your profile, tap Edit Profile, then select Activities & Skills to update your sport selections and skill levels at any time. Your Discover feed and event suggestions update immediately.

What happens after I complete Thred onboarding?

You land directly on the home feed. Your sport preferences immediately power the Connect Discover tab, event suggestions, and group recommendations — so Thred is useful from your very first session.
